SS: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

KL: My name is Kiet Lé, most know me as Skeet. I taught myself Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and web design when I was 10 around the boom of the internet. When graduating from high school, I knew my parents wouldn’t let me not go to college but I didn’t know what I wanted to study but I knew I wanted to keep doing Elusive. I already knew the basics of the graphic design programs and I wanted to round my skill set so I studied Industrial Design at San Francisco State. Now I run Elusive full time.

SS: How did you come up with the name Elusive?

KL: I started like any young creative and ever since I was young, I had the tendency to draw. In my sophomore year of high school, me and Ben Delacruz (who is now a graphic designer for the brand) started getting inspired by street artists and the meanings behind some pieces. We started to write “Elusive” but eventually we grew out of defacing property and wanted to focus our creativity towards something productive.
SS: What made you want to start a brand?
KL: And so the inception of the brand now known as Elusive, but we were hardly even a brand in 2007 of course. We did drew up a text design and at the time, I was very active on the Sole Collector forums, so I made a post to collect pre orders. We got enough orders to fund the run and two months later we did our second collection of 4 tees. The collection multiplied from that point on and now we consistently release seasonal collections.

SS: What are the brand’s biggest influences?
KL: I grew up rocking Phat Farms, Adidas Superstars, and Air Force 1’s. I’m actually influenced by sneakers a lot, but my true influence comes from music and really just walking down the street. Even if I’m driving to run a quick errand I’d hear an artist say something as simple as “blue skies” and that can spark a flame. Inspiration is found anywhere, you just have to open your eyes and ears.

SS: How did you decide that opening up your own store was the right move for the brand?

KL: We grew a demand for Elusive in San Jose and instead of selling out of my trunk I knew that having a storefront would be the next step in growing as far as visibility and feeding the hunger for the brand. I was also freshly graduated from college so I knew this would be the perfect opportunity to be able to finally work full time for the company.

I saw the potential of a growing presence of the Japantown block in San Jose and it was really a miraculous accident that I was even able to grab a storefront in the neighborhood. I was in the area and decided to swing by and talk to some of the guys on the block and what do you know, a lease was just about to be available so I jumped on it immediately.

SS: How have you been able to distinguish yourself from other brands?

KL: It’s really all a painstakingly planned experiment. As a person, I have a tendency to get bored or lose interest easily, and that may reflect in some of our work. I like to try a lot of different approaches to designs and the pieces that I work on. Our Spring/Summer 2015 line has some of those experiments evident in the collection. You really just have to be yourself and be true to your brand.

SS: Elusive hasn’t followed the trends or done anything because it is popular. How important is staying true to the brand?

KL: The most important. You really have to know the direction that you want your brand to go and be meticulous in the planning of that. Not everyone has the luxury of knowing what they want but if you at least know the destination, you can at least know which road to take.
SS: Where do you see the brand going from here?
KL: I really want to keep growing our collections to offer a full cut & sew line and accessories offering. That will be fun. Elusive’s motto is “the constant chase” and to me that means never settling for less. If I feel comfortable I know I’m doing something wrong. I look at the brand and am always being critical, always revising. We’re nowhere near where we want to be but admitting that to yourself is the first step.
